Grand Junction SX

Last weekend was the (mostly) annual Grand Junction SuperCross. I had an awesome time doing pictures and running into some friends that I hadn’t seen for a while. There were a bunch of really close and exciting races. The track got pretty dusty in the last couple of races, which made for some tough shooting conditions, and some tough riding conditions. Here are my favorite shots from the evening’s races.

Back to the (horse) Races Again

It’s summer again here on the Western Slope of Colorado and that means that it is once again time for the Black Canyon Horse Racing Association race meets! The local horse races are among my favorite summertime activities; they are cheap, family-friendly, fun, and most of all they are great opportunities for me to get my camera out and do what I do.

Although I couldn’t make it outfor Saturday, I did get to go out and enjoy all of Sunday’s races. Here are the highlights!

If you’re still looking for more awesome Black Canyon Horse Racing Association race meet photos you might want to check out my posts from last year’s races. June 2012 and September 2012. I also have pictures from the race meet at the 2012 Montrose County Fair & Rodeo, along with shots from the fair parade and the rodeo.

Horse Races – Volume 2

Another lovely Sunday afternoon spent with my camera and my oldest munchkin at the county fairgrounds watching horse racing. It was a GORGEOUS day – perfectly sunny and probably 80-85°f.

The only thing missing was my new class 10 SD card, which should be in my mailbox in the next 2 days or so. I’m running a class 4 right now, so I have no HD video capabilities and I can only take 4-5 exposures at a time in RAW burst mode. So I rolled in JPEG all day, but the light was great and my settings were spot on, so I’m SUPER happy with what turned out. Take a look at some of the highlights from this wonderful day.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge – Stage 2

Today Montrose, Colorado was the proud host to the start of Stage 2 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. It was a gorgeous day and the crowds were all in the race spirit. I got a chance to wander around the event grounds prior to the start of the race. The team rigs and cars were all fairly impressive and there was food and water being loaded up by the case.

I headed over to my first race-shooting location well before they started any road closures. I got to hang out with a lovely group of spectators and fellow photographers while we were waiting for the parade lap to begin. It was a lot of fun and I even met another local photographer that I might get a chance to go out and shoot some nature photos with sometime.

I did manage to make it out to the main highway before the race blew through, so I got more race pictures anyhow, just not exactly the ones I was going for. Unfortunately I didn’t get all my facts as straight as I should have and I missed my chance to get out to my planned second location. (My plan B should have been my plan A) Next time I’ll be all the wiser and plan it so that I’m absolutely at the spot that I want to be Before they start shutting down any roads. (And I’ll be shooting the race portion with a much higher f/Stop and much lower shutter speed so as not to have such frozen pictures, But that’s just the technical stuff)

You shoot, you learn.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Movement

This week’s photo challenge is all about movement. How you see it, how you portray it, how you capture it.
One of my absolute favorite things to capture is movement. It’s challenging to show it without too much blur, and always a thrill when you get that amazing shot that shows it perfectly.
I like to let the movement in my pictures speak for itself. Flying dirt, a trail of dust, a blurred foreground.
Here are a few of my favorite ‘movement’ shots that I’ve captured so far
